Setting up Google Webmaster Tools

Last Updated: Aug 07, 2013 10:14AM CDT
Google webmaster tools offer you tools to boost as well as track your site’s rank with their search index. To set this up with your SnapPages account, login to your SnapPages account and go to the Google Webmaster Tools implementation area under Plugins in your settings.

Click on the link provided to sign up for a Google Webmaster Tools Account. You will then either sign up for a Google Tools account, or you can login to an existing account. Once you are logged in you will be taken to a screen that says Google Webmaster Tools at the top and “Home”. Look for a link/button right about the middle of the page that says “Add a site...” and select this button. Enter the URL of your site, but be sure to NOT include the www in front of the URL and to use the domain for your site if you purchased or are pointing one (so http://mydomain.com and not http://username.snappages.com, unless you aren’t using a custom domain), then select Continue. The next screen you are taken to is where you verify ownership. Select the button that says “Add a meta tag to your site’s home page”. A box of code will appear for you to copy. Only copy the letters and numbers within the quotation marks (and not the quotation marks). Paste this code into the Verification Code Field of your SnapPages site under the Google Webmaster tools plugins (Step 2) then select “Save”. Return to your Google Webmasters Tools page and select “Verify”. This will verify placement of the code. The next screen is “Verification Home” and your site should show up as verified if the code was placed correctly and the site URL was correct for the account. You can then click on this sitename and you will be taken to a page called “Dashboard” in the lower left of the boxes, there is a link to “Submit a Sitemap - choose this link. On the next page, titled Sitemaps look for the “Submit a Sitemap button and select it. In the box type “sitemap” (no quotation marks) behind the forward slash and then select the “Submit Sitemap” button. It might take a few days for Google to start crawling your website, but this is how to get it started faster than just waiting for Google’s crawlers to find you.
